Hida-Takayama also known as Takayama, is located in Gifu prefecture with the Northern Alps as a background. It's a classic city surrounded by natural beauty and boasting many sights and activities for the foreign tourist. The morning farmers market is one of the best in all of Japan, with local artisans selling local snacks and handicrafts. Walk through the old town with preserved shop houses that will take you back in time to the 1800s.

Also visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawago, famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses many of which are over 200 years old. Gassho-zukuri means "praying hands" because the thatched roof tops are woven together, resembling hands in prayer.
